World Serpent

The World Serpent, also known as Jörmungandr and the Midgard Serpent, is the great serpent which lived in the great ocean that surrounded Midgard/the earth according to the Norse mythology. The world jörmungandr means “the huge/great serpent”.

Jörmungandr was one of the three children of the giantess Angrboda and Loki (along with Hel and Fenrir) and Odin threw him into the great ocean. He grew so big that he ended up encircling the ocean and reaching its own tail. This is the specific reason it is also closely associated with the ouroboros also known as the snake/serpent eating its own tail.
